According to the Associated Press, Jim Furyk, a veteran American golfer and former Ryder Cup captain, is set to return to lead the U.S. team for the 2027 matches, which will take place at the picturesque Adare Manor in Ireland. This significant appointment comes as the American team seeks to reverse a European dominance that has lasted for nearly three decades.
The decision to appoint Furyk, according to sources familiar with the selection process, was made after the legendary Tiger Woods withdrew from consideration for the captaincy. Woods announced an indefinite hiatus from competition and public life following a March 27 incident involving a suspected DUI, stating he needed "to seek treatment and focus on my health." The PGA of America had set a soft deadline for Woods to decide by the end of March, with a list of backup candidates ready in case of his refusal.
Jim Furyk declined to comment on the reports when approached. The PGA of America, in response to a confirmation request, stated: "We look forward to sharing details regarding our 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup captain announcement soon." This statement indicates that an official announcement has not yet been made, but the news has already widely spread within the golf community.
For Jim Furyk, this will be his second stint as Ryder Cup captain. He first led the team in 2018 in Paris, where the European team secured a convincing 17½-10½ victory. That tournament was marked by the underperformance of four captain's picks by Furyk, who collectively posted a 2-10-0 record. During that period, there was also a public dispute between Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth, and Reed's accusations against Furyk for benching him twice. Despite that experience, Furyk demonstrated his leadership qualities by guiding the Americans to victory in the 2024 Presidents Cup and successfully serving as an assistant to Captain Keegan Bradley at the last Ryder Cup.
Furyk will become the fourth U.S. captain to be given a second chance to lead the team in the modern era of the Ryder Cup (since 1979, when continental Europe joined the European team). Previously, Davis Love III (2012, 2016), Tom Watson (1993, 2014), and Jack Nicklaus (1983, 1987) received similar opportunities. However, Furyk faces an especially challenging task: he must try to win the Ryder Cup away from home, which the Americans have not achieved since a distant 1993.
The last Ryder Cup concluded with a dominant European victory, establishing a record seven-point lead after two days of competition at Bethpage Black, holding on to secure their second consecutive win under Captain Luke Donald. Donald will return to Ireland for his third captaincy, aiming to become the first captain to win three times in a row.
The Americans have not won on foreign soil since 1993. After a strong victory at Hazeltine in 2016, the team traveled to Le Golf National, a course with narrow fairways and thick rough, which proved challenging for the Americans. Despite an early 3-1 lead, they did not win any subsequent sessions. Players like Woods (0-4), Mickelson (0-2), and Bryson DeChambeau (0-3), all captain's picks, showed weak performances.
Europe has dominated the Ryder Cup, winning 11 of the last 15 matches since Oak Hill in 1995. Now, with Jim Furyk back at the helm, he faces a monumental task – to inspire the American team to victory on European soil and break a long losing streak. The golf community eagerly awaits official confirmation and the beginning of a new chapter in Ryder Cup history.
