The PGA Tour's methodical unveiling of the events that will anchor its new premier competitive structure has reached another milestone. On Tuesday, the Tour announced that the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral has been officially designated as a Championship Series event. This addition brings the current tally to five confirmed tournaments, standing alongside the major championships, The Players Championship, and the FedEx Cup Playoffs in the new 2028 framework. The Cadillac Championship, hosted outside Miami, made a notable return to the PGA Tour in 2026 following a decade-long hiatus. During this year’s May tournament, Cameron Young put on a dominant display, leading wire-to-wire and finishing six shots ahead of Scottie Scheffler. The final round was attended by former President Donald Trump, highlighting the venue's ongoing significance in the professional game. The Cadillac Championship now joins four other events that were revealed just last week as the foundation of the Championship Series: The Sentry (now held at Torrey Pines), the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the Travelers Championship, and the Sompo event. The latter is set to take over the Napa, California, date in 2027 before graduating to a full Championship Series status in 2028 at a venue yet to be disclosed. PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp announced the overhaul of the competitive structure last month, which formally introduces a two-tier system starting in 2028: the Championship Series and the Challenger Series. The Championship Series is designed to showcase the top talent in the sport, with events boasting purses of $20 million, significantly higher than the $4 million purses slated for the Challenger Series. This structural change demands substantial financial commitment from tournament sponsors seeking to host Championship Series events. While the selection of established tournaments has been largely anticipated, the inclusion of the Sompo event indicates that the Tour is willing to incorporate new elements into the schedule, leaving room for further surprises. Golf analysts and industry observers expect the remaining slots for the 2028 schedule to be filled gradually. Until the next wave of announcements, the golf world remains in a period of transition. According to Brian Rolapp, the full tournament schedule and final breakdown of the 2028 structure will be presented in early 2027. This deliberate approach to scheduling aims to provide stability and clarity for sponsors, players, and fans as the sport prepares for one of the most significant shifts in its professional history.
