In the world of professional golf, constant equipment changes are more the norm than the exception. This week, two big names have drawn attention: Brooks Koepka, who has switched putters once again, and Jason Day, who has decided on a radical overhaul of his bag.

Brooks Koepka: Back to His Roots with Teryllium

For Scotty Cameron fans, the word "Teryllium" carries special meaning. This unique alloy, a combination of copper and 11 other metals, has given Cameron's putters an unmistakable soft yet responsive feel for the last 30 years. The material first gained prominence when Tiger Woods won the Masters by 12 shots in 1997 using a Newport Tel3. More recently, Teryllium has appeared in a number of Scotty Cameron special releases and Tour putters, including several made specifically for Koepka, who won all five of his major championships using Teryllium Newport 2s.

This week at the Wyndham Championship, Koepka is back with a putter featuring the iconic copper insert. This time, it's a new Phantom 3.2 mallet. Koepka has been on a putter search this season. After returning to the PGA Tour at the Farmers Insurance Open, he lost nearly two-and-a-half strokes per round and immediately switched from his longtime Scotty Cameron T22 Newport 2 gamer to a TaylorMade Spider Tour X. However, the Spider Tour X lasted only until the Myrtle Beach event, where Koepka apparently broke it in frustration. At the following week's PGA Championship, Koepka tried a then-recently launched Spider Tour V with a long plumber's neck but still lost strokes on the greens for the sixth time in eight starts.

A third putter in as many weeks appeared at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, with Koepka returning to Scotty Cameron, this time opting for a Studio Style Fastback 1.5 mid mallet. Like his Teryllium putters, the Studio Style also features a soft-feeling insert, but it's made from Studio Carbon Steel and sports the company's chain-link mill pattern. This Fastback helped Koepka shoot his best round of the season (a 63) in the opening round in Dallas, while also recording his second-best SG: Putting round of the year. However, since then, Koepka has been hampered by injury and only finished one other event, The Open Championship, where he logged a T28, losing more than a stroke on the greens at Royal Birkdale. Despite this, his SG: Putting ranking on Tour (116th) has improved from 141st since switching to the Fastback 1.5. Meanwhile, he ranks 8th in SG: Approach.

Apparently, these results have led Koepka to go back to the familiar feel of the Teryllium insert this week, but in a new package: the Phantom 3.2. It's worth noting that this isn't Koepka's first attempt to return to Teryllium this season. At the PGA Championship, he tested a custom Phantom 9.5R with a Teryllium insert but found the putter too heavy. The Cameron Tour team constantly experiments with different insert materials, including Teryllium, Studio Stainless Steel (SSS), and aluminum. The Phantom 3.2 is the newest shape in the Phantom mallet family, designed for a more forward center of gravity (CG) and playability similar to a blade. The ".2" designation refers to the same plumber's neck hosel that Koepka used on his previous Newport 2s.

In his opening-round 67 at Sedgefield, Koepka gained nearly 2.6 strokes on the greens, ranking 9th in the field. However, he still has work to do, as he needs at least a solo fourth-place finish to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. He started the second round six shots off the lead.

Jason Day: Complete Bag Overhaul with Callaway

It appears Jason Day is done with his testing of Avoda irons. The former World No. 1 had been playing prototype sets of the company's irons and wedges with unique bulge-and-roll characteristics similar to those Bryson DeChambeau used since last fall. However, he's making a change this week as his SG: Approach ranking is outside the top 150.

Instead, Day has picked up a set of Callaway's new 2026 Apex MB irons and Opus SP wedges. But that's not all he's changing. He also added two Callaway Quantum fairway woods (a Quantum Ti 3-wood and a TD 5-wood), along with a custom all-black Odyssey White Hot OG No. 5. Day made TaylorMade's red Spider Tour famous by earning the world's No. 1 ranking and winning the 2015 PGA Championship with it, but he told GolfWRX that he used Odyssey's No. 5 as a junior. All the new clubs retain the KBS TG Black and TGI shafts he was playing previously. The only clubs he's keeping in the bag are his Ping G430 LST driver and TaylorMade Stealth 2 7-wood. This means he's still using the same 3-wood, 5-wood, and 7-wood setup he's used for most of the year before dropping to his next longest club, a new X Forged JDM 5-iron.

Other Noteworthy Gear Changes:

  • Cleveland's new RTZ 2 wedges have landed in the bag of staffer Nico Echavarria, making their first Tour action.
  • Cameron Young has moved into Titleist's secret GTS prototype 3-wood.
  • Aaron Rai has returned to a TaylorMade TP Hydro Blast DuPage, the same model he used to win the 2024 Wyndham Championship.
  • Ben Griffin has switched to a Callaway Quantum Max driver.
