Traveling the globe with a golf club in hand is more than just a change of scenery; it's an opportunity to gain a unique life experience that enriches not only your game but also your perspective. GOLF.com's Top 100 Teacher, Kellie Stenzel, shares her delight from a recent trip to the Dominican Republic and explains why a golf vacation can become one of the most memorable events in life.

Recently, while accompanying her 17-year-old son to an AJGA tournament, Stenzel had the chance not only to watch him play at the stunning Corales Golf Club but also to explore local golf gems on her own. After a demanding tournament day when her son was busy practicing, she headed to Casa de Campo to experience the legendary Teeth of the Dog course. This experience inspired her to reflect on why golf travel deserves special attention.

1. Fantastic views

The first thing that strikes you when playing on international courses is, of course, the views. According to Stenzel, the Caribbean coast in the Dominican Republic offers scenery that is difficult to put into words. The Corales course, even away from the ocean, impresses with its thoughtful design and visual appeal. Each hole is unique, making the overall experience unforgettable. The Teeth of the Dog course, as expected, fully lives up to its reputation: the oceanfront holes are breathtaking, and the course itself is an outstanding creation of golf architecture.

2. Getting out of your comfort zone

Traveling to another country where a different language is spoken can be both exciting and challenging. Stenzel decided to rent a car to explore the surroundings independently and immerse herself more deeply in the local culture, going beyond the resort. This experience allowed her to see the country from a new perspective. Despite minor difficulties, such as needing to pay a toll in local currency, these problem-solving moments often become the most vivid memories.

3. Experiencing different cultures

The people of the Dominican Republic made a profound impression on the author with their hospitality and kindness. From a customs officer who sang while checking passports to locals who were patient with attempts to speak Spanish, every interaction was filled with positivity. According to Stenzel, by the end of the trip, their Spanish had noticeably improved, and she even missed the opportunity to speak it after returning home. This aspect of travel enriches not only as a tourist but also as a person.

4. The caddie program

The experience of playing with a local caddie at Teeth of the Dog became a special pleasure for Stenzel. The caddie, who had worked on this course for 23 years, possessed invaluable knowledge and gave precise advice for executing a blind shot on the par-4 fourth hole. This advice proved crucial: the second shot landed directly in the hole, earning the author an eagle. This moment, according to Stenzel, would not have been possible without the help and experience of the local guide. The caddie program not only helps to better understand the course but also adds a unique cultural and social dimension to the game.

5. Lifelong memories

Golf trips leave behind not only great photos but also priceless memories. The pictures taken during these trips serve as reminders of the beautiful courses, amazing places, and people met along the way. Discovering a new course, exploring a new location, and meeting new people is an experience that cannot be valued in monetary terms. Stenzel fondly recalls her trip to the Dominican Republic, noting it was a "complete success" – her son played well in the tournament, and the family created memories that will last a lifetime. A golf vacation is an investment in unforgettable experiences.
