Qatar’s 15-year-old advances beyond the halfway cut

Daniil Sokolov, a 15-year-old golfer representing Qatar, made the cut at the 2026 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, one of the region’s leading amateur competitions. The championship took place 29 October–1 November on the South Course at Te Arai Links in New Zealand. Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported Sokolov’s progress on 30 October.

After the first 36 holes, Sokolov stood at 13 over par—the reported cut mark. According to QNA, 53 players advanced to the weekend rounds. For a 15-year-old facing elite amateur competitors, surviving the cut was a meaningful step. The +13 figure describes his halfway position only; it should not be mistaken for his 72-hole final score.

What making the cut does—and does not—mean

The Asia-Pacific Amateur uses 72-hole stroke play. After two rounds, golfers outside the cut line do not continue, while those who qualify can play the remaining 36 holes. Making the cut is not a podium finish, a victory or a major-championship exemption. It is a competitive threshold that gives a player more tournament experience against strong international opposition.

The exposed coastal layout at Te Arai Links presented difficult wind conditions. Even the leaders had to manage ball flight and putting carefully. Thailand’s defending champion Fifa Laopakdee was at seven under par through two rounds, and the championship’s official website confirmed that he ultimately won on 1 November. Those are Laopakdee’s scores, not Sokolov’s.

Why the Qatar result matters

Sokolov was already part of a successful autumn for Qatar’s junior national programme: earlier in October, the country won two gold medals at the Pan Arab junior championships in Egypt. The Asia-Pacific Amateur, however, brought a broader regional field and a different test.

His advancement should be understood precisely: a 15-year-old representing Qatar earned two more competitive rounds at a major amateur event, not a title or a top-ranking finish. The event was held in New Zealand; Qatar was the nation he represented.
