Davao, Philippines — 27 October 2026. Micah Shin opened the ICTSI Apo Golf Classic with a six-under-par 66, taking a three-stroke lead after the first of four rounds at Apo Golf and Country Club. The Philippine Golf Tour's official leaderboard shows Clyde Mondilla second on 69 (−3), with several challengers on 70 (−2). These are first-round scores, not the final tournament results.

Seven birdies, one bogey—and a familiar setting

The return to Apo carries personal significance for the Korean-American golfer. Shin learned and practised the game at this Davao course while growing up and was invited back for this event. He has since moved to Korea but continues to revisit Apo when his schedule permits. The surroundings may have helped him rediscover confidence after a mixed run on the Asian Tour, where he recently finished tied 19th in Macau and tied 54th in Hong Kong.

His round included seven birdies and one bogey, adding up to −6. He collected four birdies over the opening nine holes, then made three consecutive birdies from the 13th through the 15th to briefly reach seven under. A mistake at the par-3 17th cost a shot: after finding a bunker, he recovered near the hole but missed a short par putt. The closing arithmetic matters—seven birdies do not mean seven under when there is also a bogey.

Shin attributed his low score largely to finding fairways and recovering when an occasional shot went astray. His familiarity with the course does not guarantee a win, but it gave him a useful cushion going into the following rounds.

Recent winner Mondilla heads the pursuit

Clyde Mondilla arrived in Davao fresh from winning the ICTSI South Pacific Classic, where he finished on 270 strokes (−18). At Apo, his first nine yielded an even-par 36. Four birdies and one bogey over the closing nine produced 33, completing a 69 that leaves him three back. That is a strong opening position for a player who has already demonstrated his ability to close out a tournament this month.

Among those sharing the 70 (−2) mark were Russell Bautista, Ramil Bisera and Paul Echavez, also listed on the organiser's leaderboard. Others reported at 70 included Sean Ramos, Jeremy Tandoy, Dino Villanueva and Kim Tae Soo. The chase is substantial, but the 72-hole event still has three rounds to run.

What comes next

The ICTSI Apo Golf Classic runs from 27 to 30 October, using stroke play, so the winner will be determined by total strokes rather than holes won or a points tally. Shin's principal task is to repeat his accurate ball-striking without giving back shots on a course that can punish misplaced approaches. Mondilla and the group on 70 have time to close the gap. This article reports the standings after round one on 27 October; it does not represent a second-round or final leaderboard.
