Los Angeles County is opening a more accessible pathway into golf for young beginners. In its official fall programming announcement published on October 27, 2026, LA County Parks confirmed the launch of a year-round Youth Golf Program. Its first stage, Drop Zone Golf, held its opening session at Whittier Narrows Golf Course on Sunday, October 25. The free introductory program focuses on children aged 11–14, especially those who have never had the opportunity to learn the game.
What a Drop Zone session offers
Participants practise putting, chipping and the fundamentals of the full swing in a supportive group setting. No previous golf experience is required, and loaner clubs and other essential equipment are provided at no charge. Each 90-minute session is capped at 21 participants, with three instructors — a maximum ratio of seven children per coach when a class is full.
The county's stated objective extends beyond a free lesson. It hopes to make public golf more approachable for families in underserved communities and for children who may see the sport as expensive or exclusive. Removing equipment costs at the starting point is an important part of that approach.
Five public-course locations, with different start dates
The first venue is Whittier Narrows Golf Course at 8640 Rush Street, Rosemead, California. After its October 25 launch, the published schedule lists sessions on November 1, 8, 15 and 22, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. local time.
El Cariso Golf Course, 13100 Eldridge Street in Sylmar, is scheduled to join on December 5. Maggie Hathaway Golf Course, 9637 South Western Avenue in Los Angeles, is scheduled to start on December 6. Los Amigos Golf Course in Downey and Eaton Canyon Golf Course are also named in the county's five-course rollout, but their first-session dates remain to be confirmed.
Once a location starts hosting Drop Zone classes, the county intends to offer weekly sessions there through March 2027. Despite the program's 'drop-in' label, the October 27 announcement asks families to register in advance because places are limited. Current dates and registration details are listed on the official program page: https://parks.lacounty.gov/youth-golf-program/.
A structured route toward on-course golf
Drop Zone is the first of three stages in LA County Parks' Youth Golf Program. Two further components, Open Tee Golf and Future Fairways Golf, are designed to provide progression from introductory drills to greater skill development, on-course play and friendly competition. The county has not said that every stage is already operating at every venue.
The wider significance is the use of existing public courses as a gateway rather than an end destination. A child can first learn a putt or a short chip without buying a set of clubs, then potentially build toward a full playing experience. For families, the immediate practical point is to check a course's actual start date and reserve a place rather than assuming all five facilities are already running sessions.
