Japan's Kosei Takeyama enters the ACN Championship on 5–8 November 2026 with much more than a trophy at stake. The 27-year-old, who suffered a serious medical emergency in late 2024, is attempting to secure his first full exemption on the Japan Golf Tour Organization (JGTO) circuit. According to the tour's update on 4 November, he holds 60th place in the season points ranking, just inside the top 65 that determines next season's status.
Why the ACN Championship matters
The tournament takes place at Miki Golf Club in Hyogo Prefecture from 5–8 November. JGTO lists 108 entrants and a 36-hole cut retaining the top 60 and ties, with play scheduled over four rounds. The event offers a ¥120 million total purse. At the time of this report, tournament rounds have not begun, so no ACN scores or placings can yet be reported.
Takeyama also has a personal connection to the event sponsor, ACN, which signed him in September 2025. JGTO identifies the ACN Championship and the Casio World Open later in November as his two remaining practical opportunities to improve his ranking. Being 60th before the first tee shot is not the same as securing a card: other players can still move ahead of him.
A breakthrough round in October
At the Fortinet Players Cup, which ended on 25 October, Takeyama completed the final round in 63 strokes (eight under par). Having entered the final day tied for 33rd, he rose to a career-best tie for second at 11 under par overall. His official JGTO player profile confirms that 63 is his career-low 18-hole tournament score on the main circuit.
These numbers belong to the Fortinet Players Cup, not the upcoming ACN Championship. They matter because they demonstrate recent competitive form rather than a result achieved in a tournament that has yet to start.
The road back
Takeyama turned professional in December 2021. In 2024 he took sixth at the Japan PGA Championship, his first top-ten finish on the main tour, where his greens-in-regulation figures ranked especially well. Late that year, however, he suffered a cerebral infarction associated with vertebral-artery dissection and lost consciousness. JGTO reports emergency medical treatment and subsequent recovery from right-sided paralysis.
He returned to competition and completed the 2025 season, finishing 114th on the money list. A full season's play was an important milestone, but it did not provide the kind of secure tour standing he now seeks. His return to the top-65 conversation therefore carries clear professional significance beyond the human-interest aspect.
What comes next
The JGTO account describes a deliberately demanding preparation routine: regular fitness sessions, substantial practice and early mornings intended to mirror tournament days. Takeyama has not yet won a main-tour event. Any suggestion that he has already secured the 2027 exemption, or won at Miki, would be premature.
His immediate task is measurable: collect enough points at the ACN Championship and potentially the Casio World Open to remain among the season's top 65. The recent 63 shows what he can produce under pressure; the next tournaments will determine whether that performance becomes a lasting change in his career.
