For nearly two decades, the Ryder Cup was one of the most thrilling sporting events. It was a time when every showdown between Europe and the USA was a true drama on the field. Today, with eight of the last ten Ryder Cups ending in lopsided victories, it’s easy to forget those glorious days.

Just like in the murky history of golf itself, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when this golden era of the Ryder Cup began. For many years, Great Britain and Ireland suffered defeats that left them disheartened. But in 1977, with the establishment of the European Tour, Jack Nicklaus organized a meeting that changed the course of the tournament. It was proposed to include Europeans in the team, and soon stars like Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer emerged.

In 1983, Tony Jacklin, as captain of the European team, recognized that they needed the support of Ballesteros, a three-time major champion. He convinced him to join, and this was a turning point. In 1985, Team Europe secured its first victory at the Belfry, and in 1987, they repeated this success on American soil.

Seve Ballesteros became the heart of the team, inspiring and supporting his fellow players. His spirit remained with the team even after his departure, thanks to players like José María Olazábal. From 1983 to 2002, Europe won or retained the Cup six times over ten incredible tournaments. These years truly became magical for European golf.
