A home start unlike most others
Kelly Tan acknowledged feeling nervous before the first round of the Maybank Championship at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club on 29 October 2026. Supporters were already queuing at around 6:30 a.m., she said. Having played relatively little competitive golf this year, she felt the atmosphere more keenly than usual, although she thought she settled into the round reasonably well.
A difficult sequence on her second nine
In her official post-round interview, Tan distinguished her ball-striking from the number on her scorecard. She was one under par for her first nine holes. On the first hole of her second nine, however, a shot from a fairway bunker went left, took an unfortunate bounce and finished in long grass. She declared the ball unplayable and then needed further recovery shots before recording a double bogey. Other mistakes came from leaving herself awkward short-game positions or finding bunkers instead of safer landing areas.
Tan believed she struck the ball better than her score suggested. Several missed putts at important moments prevented her from maintaining momentum, she said, and putting was the area she planned to work on before her next round.
Green speed and a crowd that feels like family
Despite heavy rain the previous day, Tan praised the condition of the course. She estimated that the greens felt as though they were running at roughly 11.5 to 12 on the Stimpmeter, but explicitly said she did not know the measured number. This was her impression, not an official green-speed reading.
The home crowd meant something different from a typical tour stop. Tan explained that her parents can attend only some tournaments overseas, whereas Kuala Lumpur brings together friends and familiar faces. She remarked that it felt as if she knew about 80% of the spectators — an expression of familiarity, not a verified attendance statistic.
The interview took place after round one on 29 October. A question about a possible last home appearance should not be mistaken for a formal retirement announcement. Source: the original ASAP Sports interview transcript.
