Key points
  • A full wedge fitting at True Spec can help identify the right option.
  • But Fairway Jockey’s new wedge-bounce quiz can also provide a useful starting point.
  • GOLF.com writer Jessica Marksbury, who has undergone several full-bag custom fittings, says she had never had a wedge-specific fitting and decided to take the quiz herself.
  • She used a 54-degree wedge—the standard loft of a sand wedge—as the basis.

Choosing the right wedge bounce can significantly improve wedge performance. Although most golfers understand the value of custom club fitting, a smaller percentage apply the same logic to wedges—specifically, choosing the bounce angle that matches their technique and playing style.

What is wedge bounce?

Bounce is the angle formed by the wedge’s leading edge, the ground and the club’s sole when the shaft is positioned vertically on a flat surface.

In the main photo, the leading edge of the wedge on the left sits much closer to the ground than the leading edge of the wedge on the right. Although the wedges have the same loft, the wedge on the left has less bounce.

A full wedge fitting at True Spec can help identify the right option. But Fairway Jockey’s new wedge-bounce quiz can also provide a useful starting point. Players answer four quick questions about swing tendencies and the course conditions where they usually play, and the service recommends a bounce option.

GOLF.com writer Jessica Marksbury, who has undergone several full-bag custom fittings, says she had never had a wedge-specific fitting and decided to take the quiz herself.

She used a 54-degree wedge—the standard loft of a sand wedge—as the basis. She selected average course conditions, full swings, standard chips and open-face shots. She described her impact path as shallow.

Based on those answers, the quiz recommended a mid-bounce wedge with 8–10 degrees of bounce. The quiz can be retaken as often as desired for wedges ranging from 48 to 62 degrees of loft.

GOLF.com also lists several popular models included in Fairway Jockey’s selection.

Mizuno Pro T-1 Custom Wedge

The Mizuno Pro T-1 and T-3 wedges have joined the Mizuno Pro family. The manufacturer describes them as the best-feeling and best-performing wedges it has made. The models are designed for precision and versatility, with consistent spin and shot variety.

The T-1 is forged at Mizuno’s Hiroshima facility using the Grain Flow Forged HD process, 1025 Pure Select carbon steel and a copper underlay. Its compact Teardrop shape and straighter leading edge are designed to provide a precise visual profile and predictable turf interaction.

The T-1 offers six sole profiles: S, M, P, C, V and X. The new M profile, with mid bounce, replaces the T24 D grind, while the P profile, with additional bounce, builds on a similar D profile.

Quad Cut and Hydroflow Micro Grooves are designed to maintain consistent spin in dry and wet conditions. Stronger-lofted T-1 models use grooves optimized for spin consistency, while higher-lofted models focus on maximizing spin around the greens.

TaylorMade Hi-Toe 5 Chrome Custom Wedge

Hi-Toe 5 wedges are fully forged from soft carbon steel. Aggressive saw-milled grooves with tight tolerances, steeper walls and sharp radii are designed to maximize spin from any lie.

The RAW face and Spin Tread technology channel away moisture and help retain spin. Laser-etched channels redirect water from the face and increase friction at impact.

The larger head profile, expanded toe area and full-face grooves are designed to inspire confidence from a variety of lies. A high center of gravity produces a low, penetrating flight with high spin. Five grind options are available for different conditions and swing types.

Callaway Opus SP Custom Wedge

The two-piece Spin Pocket construction redistributes mass higher in the head, raises the center of gravity and promotes a lower, more penetrating launch. The design is intended to increase spin and control, especially when flighting shots or attacking tight pins.

The new Spin Gen 2.0 face has a 17-degree groove angle and tighter groove spacing. Combined with a deeper cross-hatch laser pattern, it is designed to provide more consistent spin from a variety of lies and increase friction.

The Shape 6 profile features precise leading-edge shaping and refined sole geometry. It has been validated by Tour players and major champions. Opus SP gap wedges use progressive shaping designed to blend with modern iron sets.

The X grind returns to the Opus SP lineup by popular demand. It is designed for players who like to open the face around the greens and for firmer turf conditions: added bounce provides forgiveness while preserving versatility.
