The Finnish Golf Union (Suomen Golfliitto) confirmed on 22 October 2026 that Antti Ahokas, 41, will become its new head of competitive golf (kilpaurheilupäällikkö) on 1 January 2027. The announcement concerns the organisation of high-performance golf, competition and player development throughout Finland; it is not a new appointment as a national-team head coach.
A planned handover rather than an abrupt change
Ahokas currently serves as sports and development manager at Suomen PGA, the Finnish professional golfers’ association. At the federation he will succeed Juha Juvonen, who is preparing for retirement. The two will work alongside one another during a transition period to preserve institutional knowledge. Golfpiste reports that Juvonen has been associated with the federation since 1998.
The selection followed a recruitment process with 23 applicants. The federation cited Ahokas's background as both a competitor and tournament organiser, his coaching-oriented approach and his network across Finnish and international golf. He has also participated in the federation’s Next Steps expert group, examining how competitive golf should develop.
What the role means for Finnish golf
In Finland, the competitive-golf director's remit extends beyond arranging tournaments. According to Golfpiste, the position connects competition administration, coach education and athlete development. Finland does not have a separately designated national head coach overseeing all these functions. Describing Ahokas as having been appointed “national team coach” would therefore misstate the job.
The decision matters to the pathway between local clubs, promising juniors, national coaching structures and elite competition. However, the 22 October announcement does not establish new selection rules, budgets or competition formats. Any specific reform must await an official decision rather than be inferred from the change of personnel.
A playing career with international credentials
Originally from Lappeenranta, Ahokas won 11 Finnish national amateur championship medals and represented Finland twice at the World Amateur Team Championships. In 2006 he won the Irish Amateur Open after defeating Rory McIlroy in a playoff and then turned professional.
Two Challenge Tour victories in 2008 helped earn Ahokas a place on the European Tour, now known as the DP World Tour. He subsequently worked in development at Suomen PGA and as a golf television commentator. His experience therefore spans playing, coaching structures, tournaments and sports administration.
The confirmed news is the appointment and its 1 January 2027 start date. The impact on Finnish results will become measurable only once the new leadership’s decisions are implemented.
