In the new "Play Smart" section on Golf.com, Dr. Greg Rose from the Titleist Performance Institute shared two important changes in swing technique that can help improve ball spin when playing with wedges. Wedges play a crucial role in precise shots to challenging flag positions thanks to their ability to create high spin.
Many amateur golfers underestimate the importance of the short game, focusing on powerful shots. Dr. Rose explains that the main mistakes that reduce spin are slowing down the club speed at impact and lowering the loft angle.
To avoid slowing down, it is recommended to make a shorter backswing and accelerate the club movement at impact. This will create the necessary speed for greater spin. "If you want the ball to spin back on the green, you need speed," says Rose. "Make sure you're increasing the club speed at the bottom."
Another important aspect is increasing the spin loft angle. This is achieved through the correct attack angle and an open clubface position at impact. "The feeling of hitting down while adding loft is key to success," notes Rose.
