Charley Hull is one of the best players in women’s golf and perhaps one of the most entertaining personalities in professional golf. The three-time LPGA winner is known for her candid nature, unusual habits, pranks and memorable stories.
In an interview with Golfweek’s Adam Schupak, Hull described waking up with her first tattoo after a night out in Ibiza—despite not remembering getting it, and despite initially wanting the tattoo on her forehead.
“I’ve got three tattoos. I got drunk when I was in Ibiza when I was 17 years old. My friend James and I went out partying. I was coming back from the club, and I thought it would be a great idea to get a tattoo across my head, because my best mate James and I always said to each other, ‘Hold tight, hold tight,’” Hull said.
Fortunately, James talked her out of getting a tattoo on her face. Instead, “Hold tight” was inked on Hull’s foot, while her friend got a matching tattoo on his arm.
But the story did not end there. Hull had been so drunk that she could not remember getting the tattoo the next morning.
“We went back to the hotel, woke up hungover, and I said to James, ‘Bloody hell, was I that drunk last night? I walked back with a plastic bag on my foot.’ He said, ‘No, Charley. That’s the wrapping after you’ve had your tattoo.’ I was like, ‘What? I got a tattoo?’ He said, ‘Yeah, you were trying to get it on your forehead and we had to stop you there,’” Hull recalled.
Hull said her second tattoo was also regrettable: her ex-husband’s name on her wrist, which she has “tried to get removed.” Her third tattoo is a keeper, at least for now. She and fellow English professional Georgia Hall have matching lightning-bolt tattoos.
On the course, Hull’s season has been a successful one. She won the PIF Saudi Ladies International on the Ladies European Tour in February. On the LPGA, she has four top-10 finishes, including a runner-up result at the U.S. Women’s Open, and has earned $1.9 million.
Hull is ranked No. 8 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. She also helped Europe defeat the United States 15-13 at the Solheim Cup on home soil in September, beating Megan Khang 3 and 2 in Sunday singles.
