The third round felt different

On 24 October 2026, Austin Smotherman spoke to Golf Channel after negotiating windy conditions at Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda. His five-under 66 left him tied with Ireland's Seamus Power at 16 under through 54 holes. The most revealing part of his post-round reflections was not the score, but the sense that Saturday had taken on the pressure normally associated with a tournament's final day.

The reason was the forecast. Strong winds and rain were expected on Sunday, creating uncertainty about how much golf could be played under normal conditions. Smotherman described the difficulty of staying fully focused on the present shot while knowing the next day could be complicated. Importantly, no final result had been declared: officials moved Sunday's tee times forward in an effort to complete the scheduled round.

What playing in Texas contributed

In the Golf Channel interview, Smotherman pointed to his experience of windy golf in Texas as useful preparation. Familiarity is not immunity, however. A gust alters far more than carry distance: it changes trajectory, lateral movement and the risk associated with different landing areas.

That is particularly relevant on a coastal course such as Port Royal. A shot that appears sensible during club selection may look risky seconds later if the breeze shifts. The practical skill is not always to hit the hardest or lowest ball, but to commit to a sensible target and recognize when conditions require a different plan.

The significance of the 18th hole

Smotherman closed his Saturday round with a conservative approach and a par save, protecting his place at 16 under. On a normal Saturday, a par at the last is simply another entry on the scorecard. With the threat of weather disruption ahead, preserving that shot can feel like protecting a final-round lead.

Power signed for a four-under 67. Taylor Moore, Corey Conners and Ben Silverman were two shots back at 14 under. The leaderboard therefore offered no guarantee that either co-leader would convert Saturday's advantage into a Sunday victory.

Wider context and tactical lesson

Earlier in October, Smotherman claimed his first PGA Tour victory at the Bank of Utah Championship. Bermuda gave him an opportunity to build on that breakthrough, but a 54-hole tie is not a second title. The final round remained scheduled, with tee times brought forward because of the forecast.

For recreational golfers, his comments illustrate a useful distinction: windy-weather scoring is not exclusively about manufacturing low ball flights. Conservative target selection, a consistent pre-shot routine and attention to the next decision can matter just as much. Mental discipline becomes especially valuable when circumstances encourage players to obsess over results beyond their control.
