The variety of locations and lies in golf is a core part of the game’s challenge. GOLF.com Top 100 Teacher Kellie Stenzel notes that the best players are those who can adapt to unfavorable conditions. Here are five situations you can learn to handle with specific adjustments. 1. Buried in the bunker. To escape a “fried-egg” lie, adjust your setup by placing the ball forward and tilting your upper body toward the target. Lowering your lead shoulder creates a steeper angle of attack, reducing the bounce effect and allowing the leading edge to dig into the sand. 2. Firm greenside sand. When the sand is hard-packed, the club’s bounce can cause the head to skip into the ball. Lean the shaft forward at address to expose the leading edge, helping it dig into the surface. 3. Buried in thick rough. To ensure clean contact, tilt your upper body toward the target and lower your lead shoulder. This promotes a steep, descending strike that cuts through the grass. Trust the loft of the club rather than trying to lift the ball. 4. Stuck in the woods. When you need a low shot to navigate trees, use a 6- or 7-iron with the ball positioned back in your stance. Shift your weight to your lead side, keep your backswing short, and maintain forward shaft lean through impact. 5. Uneven lies. When the ball is above your feet, grip down on the club to prevent digging. Be aware that the slope will influence ball flight, so adjust your aim or club selection accordingly, choosing a controlled swing over force.
