Eugenio Chacarra’s custom long putter: The story behind the change

Eugenio Chacarra, a four-time winner on the DP World Tour, has elevated his putting game by customizing his TaylorMade Spider Tour S Long putter. Over the past few months, Chacarra worked with TaylorMade Tour Rep Alex Marine to address issues with his setup. While long putters typically feature a 79-degree lie angle, it was discovered at the BMW PGA Championship in September that this was too upright for Chacarra, causing him to toe the putter in and struggle with speed control. With assistance from James Holley, the team flattened the lie angle from 79° to 76°. This adjustment allowed Chacarra to stand further from the ball and align his eye line better, leading to a more consistent stroke. The putter, weighing 870g with a high-MOI construction, was perfectly tuned to his needs. Beyond the equipment changes, Marine used the GRASP Smart Putting gate to help Chacarra lengthen his backstroke and maintain better head stability. Since the switch, Chacarra has risen to 3rd on the DP World Tour in adjusted Strokes Gained: Putting, a massive jump from his previous rank outside the top-75. His recent victory at the DP World India Championship further solidified his position as the leader in the Race to Dubai and all but secured his PGA Tour card for next season.
