An NBA timeout produced one of the more unusual charitable moments of the golf season. On Friday, October 23, six-time PGA TOUR winner Tony Finau stepped onto a temporary putting green at the Utah Jazz home opener at Delta Center in Salt Lake City. Waiting for him was a challenge carrying a potential $1 million contribution to his namesake foundation.
The pledge came from ESPN personality Pat McAfee, who was attending the game. Ordinarily, a spectator takes a putt during a timeout for a modest cash prize. The Jazz instead surprised McAfee by sending out Finau, the Utah-born professional golfer, and McAfee agreed to donate $1 million to the Tony Finau Foundation if he made the long putt. The charity supports young people and families through education, wellness and recreation.
The first attempt missed left. Finau made no mistake on his second try, rolling the ball into the cup to cheers from the arena. McAfee walked over, congratulated him and shook his hand. Reporting confirms a public pledge to give the money; it does not independently establish that a bank transfer had been completed by publication time.
The stunt followed another high-stakes charity challenge. A week earlier, McAfee's College GameDay field-goal contest involved Utah Jazz owners Ryan Smith and Ryan Sweeney adding money to the prize. After the student succeeded on a second attempt, the Jazz used the home opener to turn the tables on McAfee and give the golf star his own pressure moment.
Finau has recently discussed experimenting with an unusually long, flat putter grip while working on his game, but the equipment used in the arena challenge has not been independently verified. What is clear is the result: one successful putt prompted a seven-figure charitable commitment rather than a tournament trophy. Event details were cross-checked against KSL Sports (October 23), Golfweek (October 24) and GOLF.com (October 25, 2026).
