Three MySpider Faces Compared: What TaylorMade's Putter Inserts Really Change

An October 23 hands-on report compares Surlyn Pure Roll, Aluminum Pure Roll and milled aluminum MySpider faces. We separate useful fitting insights from claims the test cannot establish.

On October 23, 2026, MyGolfSpy published a hands-on comparison of customized TaylorMade MySpider Tour and Tour X putters. TaylorMade launched the personalization program back on June 11, 2026; this is not a new October product launch. The timely development is a closer look at how three face constructions differ in feel, and how cautiously the results should be interpreted.

Three face choices, not just three finishes

The MySpider configurator offers Surlyn Pure Roll, Aluminum Pure Roll and Milled Aluminum face options. The polymer-based Surlyn model is the softest in TaylorMade's stated feel range. Aluminum Pure Roll is intended to feel firmer; the milled aluminum face is the firmest of the three. These are functional differences in contact and sound, not merely cosmetic color choices.

In his October 23 report, Dave Wolfe described a similar subjective ranking. Surlyn felt softest, aluminum Pure Roll was noticeably firmer and the milled aluminum face offered the crispest feedback. In his personal putting sessions he preferred the distance feedback of the milled option. That is an individual assessment — not independent proof of fewer putts or better accuracy for every golfer.

The difficulty of comparing inserts fairly

The sound and feel of a putter change how golfers interpret impact. A more metallic note can seem 'hotter', yet sound alone cannot establish that the ball will roll farther on a given green. Stroke length, impact location, delivered loft and green speed all matter.

The review has an important limitation: the putters were built on both Spider Tour and Spider Tour X heads and used different grips. Their head geometry and weight distribution are not identical. That makes it impossible to isolate face material as the sole cause of any observed distance-control difference. There was no large blinded sample or published standardized robot dataset. The article is valuable as a fitting insight, not a lab verdict.

Four hosels and meaningful fitting choices

According to TaylorMade's June 11 technical overview, both MySpider platforms offer L-Neck, Small Slant, Double Bend and Center Shaft hosels. Those configurations change offset, balance and how the putter suits a particular stroke arc. Fitting hosel, length, lie and loft may affect starting direction more directly than choosing a favorite color.

There are six alignment patterns for MySpider Tour and five for Tour X. The appearance options include four head finishes, 10 sole-plate colors, 10 rear-badge colors and 16 paint-fill choices. The official US store lists $420 as a starting price for MySpider Tour, though availability, build times and final pricing vary with the market and options.

A better way to run your own test

If possible, compare putters with matching length, loft, lie, swing weight, hosel and grip, changing only the face. Roll repeated sets from roughly 5, 15 and 30 feet, recording both starting direction and the distance past or short of the hole. Repeat on a second green speed. A soft-feeling insert may suit one player while the clearer feedback of milled aluminum helps another.

The takeaway: MySpider's meaningful innovation is the ability to configure different face constructions and shaft attachments within a familiar putter platform. The October comparison adds useful firsthand context, but it does not establish a universal winner.
