Scotland’s inaugural Road to the Home of Golf concluded at St Andrews Links on 18 October 2026, bringing 120 junior players to the Eden and Strathtyrum courses. Two teenagers became the first winners: Charlie Thomson, 14, of Cambuslang Golf Club and Lukas Marr, 12, of Anstruther Golf Club. The result matters beyond the trophies: the event was designed to give mid- and high-handicap juniors an opportunity that traditional elite championships do not always provide.
Two winners, two courses
Thomson secured the Colt Cup on the Eden Course. Playing off a 12.0 Handicap Index, he recorded 75 strokes and 44 Stableford points on his first visit to St Andrews. One particularly memorable moment was a chip-in birdie.
Marr won the Young Tom Trophy on the Strathtyrum Course. His 27.4 Handicap Index, round of 77 strokes and 50 Stableford points delivered the title. He explained afterwards that he concentrated on each shot rather than anticipating the final outcome.
These scores must be read correctly: Stableford points are not strokes under par. Stableford awards points hole by hole in accordance with the applicable handicap allowance; 44 and 50 points do not mean 44- or 50-under-par rounds.
A different route into competitive golf
Scottish Golf and St Andrews Links Trust created the series for players aged 18 or younger at the start of 2026 with handicap indexes ranging from 8.5 to 54.0. Clubs staged local qualifying events throughout the season, with the qualifying juniors invited to the home of golf. The weekend included a practice day on 17 October and the decisive rounds on 18 October.
The organisers reported 73 clubs from 24 Scottish local-authority areas represented in the final. In response to demand, the two divisions were expanded to 60 players apiece. A preview mentioned 77 clubs expected to take part; 73 is the subsequently reported final figure, not an alternative count of the same thing.
Removing the geographic barrier
For junior golfers in rural and remote parts of Scotland, reaching St Andrews can require significant family expenditure. The event provided travel support to 43 players across 28 clubs. Participants also had access to a Beat the Pro activity with professional golfer John Paterson during the practice day.
The two organising bodies emphasised that the experience was designed around confidence, participation and enjoyment, rather than the pressure associated with elite junior selection. Scottish Golf has indicated that it wants to build on the format with St Andrews Links Trust in 2027, though this should not be confused with a confirmed schedule for next year's finals.
Why it matters for Scottish golf
Road to the Home of Golf is a test of an important participation idea: can a nationally recognised event include juniors who are still developing their skills, while retaining the excitement of a real competition? Two handicap divisions, a club-based qualification process and targeted travel assistance provided a practical answer in its first year. The inaugural winners have earned their place in the record books, while the wider lesson is about giving more young people a reason to stay in the game.
