NEWQUAY, CORNWALL, ENGLAND. The exposed links at Newquay Golf Club has had to change how its eighth hole is played after Storm Austen swept across the Cornish coast on Friday, 23 October. Powerful north-westerly winds, combined with dry conditions, carried substantial quantities of sand from nearby dunes onto the opening section of the eighth fairway. Rather than announcing an immediate return to the usual routing, the club is assessing how to clear the deposits and restore the affected playing surface.

A par-5 temporarily becomes a par-3. The eighth normally plays as a par-5 measuring 518 yards from the blue tees. In the interim, golfers are directed to a temporary teeing area beyond the east–west path, from which the hole plays as a 147-yard par-3. This is an operational alteration while repair options are assessed, not an announcement that the hole has been permanently redesigned. The temporary position allows golfers to avoid the sand-covered part of the fairway.

Check the revised Stroke Index. In its 24 October update, the club assigned the temporary eighth hole Stroke Index 8 for both men and women. The men's sixth is now Stroke Index 4 and the women's first Stroke Index 2. These changes matter for golfers using handicap strokes, notably in match play: an old scorecard should not be treated as definitive while the temporary setup is in place. Players should follow the club's current instructions and scorecard.

What was—and was not—damaged. Secretary and manager Peter Batty said the clubhouse had sustained no structural damage and that the practice nets survived the wind. One of the three nets was already back in operation when the club issued its update; the intention was to reopen the remaining nets on Monday, 26 October, although the statement did not confirm that this had happened. The club planned to inspect the fairway during the following week and develop a restoration approach. While some reports point to sand from Fistral Beach, the club specifically described it as coming from the dunes and did not identify an exact origin.

A distinctive links challenge. Newquay Golf Club sits above Fistral Beach in an unusually exposed position. Its dune-side setting is integral to the experience of links golf, but this incident illustrates the practical difficulties of maintaining a course when severe coastal winds alter the playing surface overnight. The shorter eighth preserves a route for play while protecting the most affected stretch during evaluation.

Information for visiting golfers. Anyone planning a round should check the club's latest course status, temporary teeing area and revised scorecard before selecting a tee time. No confirmed date has been given for restoring the full-length eighth fairway, and no permanent reconstruction or construction budget has been announced.
