Dumbarton Golf Club in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, is facing severe flooding after Storm Boelo. By 27 October 2026, aerial photographs showed water across much of the 18-hole parkland course, obscuring sections of its fairways and greens. The first task is to remove the water safely; any definitive assessment of the damage will have to wait until levels recede.
How the flooding developed
Storm Boelo brought high winds, heavy rain and tidal flooding to western Scotland over 24–25 October. In an official statement dated 26 October, West Dunbartonshire Council confirmed flooding in Dumbarton, including the town centre and riverside areas, and described its emergency response. The council's statement addresses the wider storm damage rather than providing a golf-specific loss estimate.
According to a statement from Dumbarton Golf Club management reported by Scottish journalists on 27 October, water was still entering the course through a damaged section of the river embankment. The club was trying to secure pumps to speed up drainage and might have to fund the pumping itself. These are immediate response measures, not confirmation that a course restoration contract has been awarded.
What may need to be repaired
A meaningful inspection of greens, fairways, drainage channels, bunkers, bridges and trees will only be possible after the floodwaters fall. The club has warned that some bunkers could need replacement sand, bridges may require repairs, and debris or damaged trees may need clearing. The extent and cost of any work remain unknown.
Other local golf clubs have offered support. The club has also reported reduced operating hours while it manages the disruption. No reliable date for a full return to normal play has been announced.
A historic club beside the River Leven
Founded in 1888, Dumbarton Golf Club is based at Overburn Avenue, Broadmeadow, Dumbarton G82 2BQ. Its 18-hole parkland layout includes tree-lined fairways and streams. The course lies close to the River Leven, making drainage and the condition of riverside flood defences particularly relevant to its recovery.
Visitors should not treat previously advertised booking arrangements as proof that the course is playable. Any intended visit or tee time should be checked directly with the club until a fresh course-status notice is available.
