Spectators at the Australian Open anticipated a triumph for Cameron Smith but witnessed an unexpected turn of events. On the final 72nd hole, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen made an incredible save from a challenging position in the high grass, while Smith, on the green, three-putted for a bogey. This secured Neergaard-Petersen his first victory on the DP World Tour.
On the final green, surrounded by thousands of fans, Smith and Neergaard-Petersen approached the last hole with equal chances of victory. After Neergaard-Petersen's shot went right, Smith found himself in a favorable position but couldn't capitalize on his advantage.
For Neergaard-Petersen, this success marked the culmination of the season. Just a year ago, he was competing on the HotelPlanner Tour, and now he has earned a PGA Tour card for 2026 and claimed his first DPWT victory.
"Winning at my last tournament of the year is what I needed for a perfect season. I am incredibly happy," noted Neergaard-Petersen after the round. This victory paved his way to the Masters, making him the first Dane to win the Australian Open.
Cameron Smith, although not victorious, performed brilliantly, especially on the 17th hole with a birdie that kept the score even going into the final hole.
Rory McIlroy also left his mark on the tournament, finishing with birdies on the last two holes and a total score of seven under par.
The 2025 Australian Open became a landmark event with dramatic moments and unforgettable performances, entering the history of golf.
