Our guest author today is Kenny Read, skipper of the PUMA Ocean Racing boat the Il Mostro. We invited Kenny to join us for our Boston PUMA Open and he had a few things to sayOkay, I guess I should have known. The PUMA Open? Sounds innocent enough right. After all, it’s just golf. I have been sauntering 'round a few golf courses in my day and figure that a scramble style event is pretty painless and typically good fun. Boy am I naive. I've been around this company long enough to know that ...

The Not So Distant Future28 August 2009, 3:05 pm
Movies like “2001: A Space Odyssey”, “Starship Troopers” and “Back to the Future II” prove that predicting the future, though entertaining (yes, I liked Starship Troopers), is almost always dead wrong. That being said, I’m going to try my hand at it and see if I can predict some shifting trends in a game that is in desperate need of a facelift. Golf is played by 57 million people worldwide, 51 million of which will never break 100 and 91% of whom will never belong to country club. ...

Women's Olympic Curling Eclipses Golf27 February 2010, 3:37 am
They play hooks and cuts at will. My hooks and cuts are unintentional. They gracefully slide down the ice gently releasing a rather large boulder with skill and precision on an intended line. I shove a too small white ball on grass on no discernible line. They're attractive. Male golfers are not.
For the better part of the last week I've discovered women's Olympic curling. I must confess there's still much to learn about this quasi-sport, but I'll have to wait another four years to get my deg...

Woods' Mea Culpa Seemed Sincere19 February 2010, 8:43 pm
As apologies go this one appeared to have covered all the bases, family, friends, fans, sponsors. Tiger Woods' public apology ran the gamut. In the interest of rehab and recovery, it had to. Whether one believes him is probably a matter of your opinion of him before the speech. I don't think any popularity polls were changed in the twelve or so minutes that he spoke. Like any other change of direction in life, the stated behaviors are one thing, the proof is in doing. Rightly, he admitted as muc...

Vanilla Villegas - Beneath Camilo's Colorful Exterior8 March 2010, 3:57 pm

“I don’t have the money…”30 January 2010, 6:40 am

At the very least, Daly has shown a mastery in getting the mainstream media [...]...

Curing Fat Shots9 March 2010, 7:21 pm
Never let it be said that Twitter isn’t a great way to find helpful information. Recently, Dexter from Golf Tips & Quips tweeted a helpful YouTube video featuring Hank Haney giving some great advice on two causes of fat shots and how to cure them.

Reading Lies on the Golf Course, Part I1 March 2010, 4:35 pm
A few weeks back, I was contacted by a reader who is interested in learning how to read lies and suggested the topic to me. I thought it was a great idea, so here we are. He pointed to a recent golf telecast where Nick Faldo, in discussing the new groove regulations for 2010, pointed out that players are going to have to do a better job of reading lies now.

Note: please see below for an important disclosure.
You may not have heard of Knoodle because it’s fairly new, but it’s a pretty interesting place. Trading Science for Art Around the Greens21 January 2010, 3:32 am
As most of you realize by now, I’m a big proponent of the type of short game that Dave Pelz advocates.
Not only do I recommend his books, but I enjoy his articles in Golf Magazine each month. In the February 2010 issue, he wrote an article about choosing wedge lofts wisely. It kind of centered around the new wedge groove rule changes and, as usual, was full of great facts and advice.
One thing kind of caught my attention, though, and [...]© 2007-2009 Life in the Rough. All Rights Reserv...

Five Recovery Skills You Need in Your Game13 January 2010, 3:24 am
You’ve probably heard it a thousand times. Golf is a game of misses. If you think about it, you only make 18 shots per round. Every other shot misses to some degree. As we all know, some of them miss by an extremely high degree. Unfortunately, they tend to build golf courses so that the worse you miss, the more harshly you’re punished.
Golf courses are filled with trees, water, sand, rough and so on that are just waiting to dole [...]© 2007-2009 Life in the Rough. All Righ...
